VA loan essentials
What the VA says about its home loan benefit.
- • Loans are made by private lenders and partially guaranteed by the VA.
- • In many cases no down payment is required, as long as the price doesn't exceed appraised value.
- • No private mortgage insurance (PMI).
- • You'll need a Certificate of Eligibility and must meet lender credit and income standards.
- • Most borrowers pay a one-time funding fee, which can be financed; some veterans — such as those receiving VA disability compensation — are exempt.
- • The home must be your primary residence; eligible properties include homes of up to four units.
